Anxiety & Depression

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a common emotion that most people feel regularly and is considered a normal response to a perceived threat or danger. Nearly everyone can feel fear from time to time. However, for people with an anxiety disorder, the persistent and intense fear can become an overwhelming feeling that disrupts their daily lives.

Im here to work with you to combat anxious thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Finding the right therapist is the first step in your healing journey. I offer compassionate support with evidence-based therapies to help manage your anxiety and feel able to enjoy life more.

The Impact of Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety disorders can occur from a multitude of factors. These can include:
  • A genetic predisposition or family history of anxiety.
  • Exposure to a traumatic incident.
  • Prolonged exposure to multiple stress-inducing life events or changes such as moving
  • A major emotional incident such as a bereavement or relationship issues.
There are common causes of anxiety, but keep in mind there can be many others. I understand that mental health and what influences it is personal. I will help uncover what may be causing your anxiety to identify the best path for treatment.

Emotional and Physical Effects
The impact of anxiety on a person can be disruptive or even debilitating. When left untreated, symptoms can severely increase over time. Symptoms and their effects can manifest differently depending on the person. Common symptoms of anxiety disorders include recurring negative thoughts and behavioural changes such as withdrawal and avoidance.
Along with the emotional effects like shame and low self-esteem, individuals can also experience physical symptoms.
These can be present in various forms:
  • Nausea
  • Shaking, sweating and dizziness
  • Chest pain and heart palpitations
  • Feeling butterflies in the stomach
  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath

What is Depression?

Most people feel run down and low every so often. But for many of us, feeling ‘down’ can be more detrimental to our mental well-being, work/study and relationships.
Depression is a mood disorder and a common mental health condition that affects millions of people worldwide. The majority of individuals that experience Depression can also experience Anxiety.
It is a serious condition that can significantly impact someone’s mental health, quality of life and daily functioning.

Depression is a complex condition that can manifest in different ways and is often characterised by persistent feelings of sadness, loss of interest, hopelessness, and helplessness for at least 2 week period.
Individuals may experience major depression, persistent depressive disorder, postpartum depression or other mood disorders.
Depression can be triggered by other mental health conditions such as Anxiety, Substance Abuse or PTSD. Depression requires the right support from a Therapist or another relevant mental health expert.

Signs and Symptoms of DepressionDepression can appear differently in individuals. But, there are some consistent traits we see in clients experiencing depression. Recognising the signs and symptoms is crucial when seeking depression treatment in Melbourne. Depression can cause mental and sometimes physical symptoms that often feel unexplainable and can negatively impact ones perspective of themselves, others and the world.
If you feel you or someone you know is experiencing depression, it’s important to recognise the warning signs and symptoms in order to see it as something that is happening to me as opposed to this is me. By doing so, the right support can be actioned to treat depression.
Some common symptoms of depression include:
  • Feelings of sadness or hopelessness
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities
  • Persistent low mood
  • Changes in appetite and weight
  • Insomnia or excessive sleeping
  • Immense feelings of guilt and worthlessness
  • Difficulty concentrating

Physical symptoms such as headaches and body aches
A person feeling depressed may also suffer from other symptoms. Depression does not look and feel the same for every individual. This is where a professional psychologist can support you in uncovering what may be causing your negative thoughts and feelings and how you can overcome them.
